days of our day care

About a month ago... the big kids and I decided that we needed a project.  Something that would involve all of us working together.  We do lots of projects that show individuality, but not many that show what we can do together.  I thought about it and decided that we should make a papier mache volcano... and they were ALL IN!  So we traipsed back to the shop at the house to find a piece of plywood for our base and covered it with aluminum foil.  Then we fashioned a model volcano out of a Pringles can and tissue paper all glued down and together.  Next I mixed up a batch of papier mache as the boys tore pieces of newspaper.  Then we painted our volcano and the base.  And the most exciting step of all was carrying our creation outside and making it erupt by adding baking soda, a little food coloring and vinegar.  Tis was their most favorite step of all.  The big finale!

 

 

Note: this did not all happen in one day.  Our Wednesdays, at the time, consisted of only the bigger boys.  So we used our Wednesday time together to work on our project a little at a time. 

 

 



a recipe for rabbit

There have been two very successful rounds of rabbit hunting around here in the last month.  Enough so that the first hunt brought (I wanted to say brang right then) home six and the second hunt, two weekends later, brought home thirteen!  Granny cooked a batch for us at her house one night and after the second hunt I asked Shaun to keep a couple of fresh ones out for me to cook.  I used a recipe from a new cookbook I have called Living Naturally from some local gals from Living Naturally Group of Middle Tennessee.  The recipe I found is from Gina Cooper who says it is a family favorite.  Well guess what... it's a family favorite in our house now too!  I made a few changes from the original recipe like adding the mushrooms.  Enjoy!

You seriously have no idea how wonderful this recipe is.  Wine sauce can make anything good!  Not to mention the heavenly aroma left hanging in the house for two days.  I could drink this sauce with a straw!

Gone Fishing

Sometimes there's nothing better than a make-shift fishing pole.  I got it in me this morning to come up with some sort of fishing poles for the kids to play with today.  It's way too muddy to actually fish in the ponds.  So after I found up a coat hanger rod and wooden dowel for poles, yarn for fishing line and a jingle bell for bait, we headed outside to fish off the back porch.

After we caught all those fish we found a puddle at the end of the house.  When we caught all those fish and it was time to come inside, we got two indoor ponds (boxes) and made cut out fish with magnets on them.  You really have to have a steady hand when fishing for the indoor fish.  The magnets stick to the metal ball inside the jingle bell so it's a little tougher to do. 

These kids have had a blast and didn't want to put their poles away for nap time
