Miniature Haunted House

 Hello all!  One of the most satisfying things about the way I make my miniatures is turning everyday trash into something that you would never guess is made from trash.  Today I made a miniature haunted house from a printer cartridge box.  Luckily it already had the roof slant which is what inspired me.  The house isn't an exact scale.  It could possibly be used as a large dollhouse inside a 1:12 scale dollhouse.  What I envisioned was a Halloween playroom inside a carveable pumpkin with the tiny haunted dollhouse being the focal point on the center of the playroom floor... with possibly a light-up ghost next to it.  It's a thought in progress at this point.  It's been a while since I have made a Halloween pumpkin.  Maybe it's about time!  I hope you enjoy this demonstration in pictures :)

Here is the small box I used.  It was slanted on both sides so I just cut one slant off and glued it to another piece of cardboard from the same box.

I drew my windows and door and cut out the windows with an exacto knife and cuticle scissors.  They aren't perfectly cut out and I'm Ok with that.  I think it adds to the look.

I used almost the entire box in this project.  I glued pieces together for the steps and used toothpicks for the porch columns.

I added another piece of cardboard for the roof and thin string for the details.

When the glue dried... enough... I am so impatient, I painted the whole outside black.

Actually, I fibbed, I used a piece of cardboard from something else for the floor divider.

I decided to furnish the inside a little bit and give it an abandoned look.  For the bed I used a piece of an earring and two small nails for the headboard, stacked and glued pieces of the box and beads for the bed feet.  I also dug out a tiny piece of black crushed velvet for the bedspread.

I made a fireplace and broken chair for the downstairs and glued bits of paper on the floor to create a mess.  I also used tinted sawdust for the moss.  I wound up putting some on the outside of the house too.

Oh my... I'm pretty sure any couch has ever made my mouth water so.

One day.. we will need a new couch.  I will not have a couch like this with a cat in the house... especially a blonde one.  Not that he's is going anywhere over a couch...

A Barbie Bathroom

I am pretty sure this will be the last Barbie room/addition to our Barbie house here at the day care.  If not, I will have to gut the rest of the room and deem the entire room one big Barbie house.  I reckon I have to draw the line somewhere.  This room stumped me a bit.  How does one make a toilet for a Barbie house?  I came up with one that is self-contained and tank-less.  It is also water-less... thank goodness.  It is made from a tea box and has a Dixie cup for the bowl.  You can even raise the lid.  I cut a sink into an existing counter that I had made and used ribbon to hide the card stock basin.  The shower curtain was found in a bag of scarves.  I don't recall seeing it before but it made things a lot easier on me as I was rushing to work one morning and found it.  I quickly ironed a seam, sewed it and hurried out the door.  The accessories, perfume bottles, and pictures are made from beads, shells that I glittered and magazine cut outs.  It came together nicely.  At the last minute, glue gun in hand, I glued everything down.  I felt kind of mean in doing this but I wanted to take pictures and honestly speaking I have been known to go in the Barbie house after everyone leaves and straighten everything back up.  This way, it stays and the Barbies have use of the facilities.  Is that wrong? :)

A Barbie Oasis

This is what I did today outside of watching kids, cooking and cleaning at the day care.  I've had it in my mind to create an "outdoor" space for the Barbie house since I started this.  MyFroggyStuff on youtube has a lot of instructional videos on many how to's of the Barbie world.  I got this from the Secret Garden video.  Here are my pictures along the way today.

 

You take your glue gun and blob on "rocks".

 

I decided I probably didn't have enough glue sticks to do the whole box so I cut out windows to save space and glue.

 

Some of her videos say to line the edges with paper and glue sticks for a finished look... so I did.

It literally took me all morning long, including stopping for kid stuff, to make the glue rocks and my hand was taking a beating from it!

During naptime I got to work painting.  Gray first to get the mortar and base coat on the rocks.

Then dabbing of neutral colors and whites around the windows.

And leftovers for lunch.

I placed the faux grass astro turf that I got from my sister in to check the look.

For my window filler I decided to print off pretty pictures of the sky until my printer ran out of ink.  So I broke open the Lucky Charms box and painted my own.

I bought this vine bundle at Hobby Lobby along with the spray of tiny pink flowers.

I just duct taped the scene in each window.  Oh And I got a stick from outside for the tree.
