home tour: our room

Welcome to the second part of our home tour.  I'm not some sort of interior design person by any means.  Heck I didn't even tuck our blanket in under our quilt... mainly because I am tired of doing it and have come to the realization that it doesn't matter.  I didn't even dust the room.  The light seemed good that afternoon so I went a got my camera and started shooting.  Our room, much like the rest of our house, is filled with things that mostly mean something to us.  Antiques, keepsakes and hand-me-downs and it's just who we are.

I have a thing about not storing anything under the bed.  As you can see there is a dog bed under there and a cat bed and possibly a little hair from each but I committed long ago to for-go using the space as storage.

The cow chair was recovered this way by my sister and I just two weeks before we got married at our house.  I almost lost an eye during that process.  It's also got Kate's beach towel on it which I could have thought to move.

I made the dream catcher here with a doily and feather that I found.  Our friends gave us the shelf for a wedding present and the horse came from Shaun's collection as a child.

This is my terrarium that is a year and a half old.  I haven't watered it but twice since I made it and I'm sure it didn't need it then.

I found this baby doll leg with moss in it down one of our fence rows and knew where it's proper home should be.  This is why I call my terrarium my "terrorarium".

I paid two bucks at an antique mall for this embroidered picture and it has since been one of my favorites.

Uncle Randy gave my this mannequin head not long ago.  She old, fragile and has had a nose job but I love her.  She also came with the hat.

Two of my favorite pictures.

I found this cow tooth not long ago... I also found the other things.  The bird nest I found in a tree and the others at Bellbuckle last fall.

Views from our window.  Luckily there aren't any houses out there or we'd need blinds!

You can find the first set of pictures from my home tour in our guest room HERE.

You can also find a tutorial on planting terrariums HERE which is when I planted the one here.

Sorry no green recipe today for the last Thursday in March!  I made guacamole several times and some avocado soup that I couldn't bring myself to post.  I was happy with my guac just not the recipe I took picture of.  Oh well... maybe next week.

Home Tour: Our Guest Room

I am starting our home tour here on my blog with our guest room.  When thinking of sharing my world in this way with you I really didn't expect this to be the room I began with.  But this past weekend the morning light was coming through the windows in a really nice way.  I call it our guest room mainly because it's where our guests sleep when we have them.  It is also the room that gets good morning sun so I over-winter some plants who spend their summer out on the porch.

The room houses a bed, dresser and chest of drawers from my Grandparent's home.  The three pieces were in their basement while I was growing up.  There was a huge fireplace also in their basement and an electronic football game that was large and loud and was stored underneath this bed.  The four posts were cut off at some point long ago.  They did a good job but obviously they used to be a lot taller.

The corner cabinet was from my Grandmother Covington.  It lived in her dining room and then with my sister Tracy until I got it many years ago.  It was in my kitchen (covering up an air vent.. duh) until last summer when I decided it didn't make sense anymore for it to cover up the air vent.  I like it in this room and hate that I cleaned it out when I moved it.  I still remember everything that was in it  and even go to look for things there.  The corn shucker on top was a gift from Shaun's Granny.  I love it and can only imagine all the hard work and canned corn it helped her create.

The Raggedy Ann and Andy's belonged to my sisters and then me.  We all played with them.  The cradle is a Hulsey heirloom.  Shaun's Grandfather and his siblings were all rocked in it.  I am not positive if it is older than that.  I'll have to ask Aunt Juanita again.  The globe lamp was my Aunt's, mothers.  The poster above the bed is one in a collection of Baja Burrito posters I have hanging around the house and the enamelware kettles are part of my enamelware affliction... I mean addiction.

I plan on sharing one room per month this year with you.  And when I run out of rooms I'll start with the outside!  Toodles!

P.S. you can see tons of photos of the building of our house HERE from start to finish.

The Dirty Dirty - Part 2

It has literally taken me four weeks to post this.  I have had to come to terms with how awful the before pictures look of this room.  Plus it wasn't completely finished until yesterday when I gave the chair a face lift.

You are about to see before and after pictures of my "Craft Room".  There is really no excuse for just throwing any and everything into a space  but truthfully I have had a craft room that I treated this way in the last two houses I have lived in.  Which changed their name to "Crap Room".  I honestly had a  mental plan that I would be uprooted from the space one day.   That it would be someone else's room.  Since that isn't going to happen, I decided to give the room meaning.  To sort of embrace the space and call it mine.  Only after three years of treating it like a crap room!

So here are the before and after pictures of the room. Brace yourself.
A disaster area.  I would make a joke about it when people would come over.  Now I can't believe I showed it to anyone.  The trash bags didn't have actual trash in them.  They were summer sheets and something I drug home.

I got rid of the wooden file cabinet and the side table housing my old printer.  I threw things away, moved the movie shelf in to the closet and put some things in the attic and other things back where they belong.

My sister gave me two barn wood shelves (and helped me all day) that her husband made.  I kept the sewing table and chair.  I kept the desk for now although it is empty and ready to go whenever I decide to get a drawing table.  I moved one chair in from the living room.  My sister also helped (a ton) make drapes for the windows.  I plan on finding a rug to go in the middle of the room sometime.

So are you ready to see the result?

WaaLaa!  I would make a tutorial on the chair redo but I seriously think I broke every upholstery recovering rule that there is.  Then again it would go to show you that everything doesn't have to be perfect when it's yours.  To look at it you would never know.  It can be removed when I am tired of it.  I covered it in a waffle fabric I have had for a long time.

And there's the Dirty Dirty part two.  I have other areas that are in need of cleaning out.  None that look as bad as this I promise.  I swear I am not a hoarder.  I am busy body with a lazy streak.  That's what we will call it.  I don't put things back where they belong.  So if I can teach myself to do that my life will be a lot simpler!
